Gratitude this holiday season

I like how the start of the Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice/Shop Till You Drop season begins with Thanksgiving. Yes, I’m aware of the damage done to our Native Americans and all the horrors our European forefathers brought to this nation including, but not limited to, smallpox, slavery, and partially hydrogenated oils.

However.

I choose (and it is a conscious choice) to focus on those people and ideals for which I am truly thankful instead of the flaws of colonialism or that dead turkey on the table.

On this beautiful November day, I appreciate:

Family members and friends who surround us with love and support.

A holiday where I don’t have to fucking starve or apologize.

Empathy.

Vegas in two weeks.

Twin sons who are good, kind, bold, and smart.

Health issues that take my mind off hate mail.

The self-control to keep some things to myself.

Forgiveness.

Moffitt Cancer Center.

My beautiful nephew coining the phrase, “I’m are kind and loving!”

You.

You.

You.

Old emails that remind me to always counter hate with love.

Old emails that remind me how people suck.

The parts of my body that still function properly.

How my dad’s political views are no longer relevant.

Going broke due to health care costs instead of overspending at the mall.

Children who remind me every day what is truly important: eggnog and rum.

Siblings who respond with kindness and compassion when we’re hurt or scared.

Dysfunctional half-wits who DON’T bombard us with negativity and nastiness.

Higher platelet numbers than I’d seen in three years.

Dead fishies and a dietitian who made that possible.

A brand new, healthy niece – best birthday present ever.

Those who support my right to express myself.

Full-time gigs that allow me to have dinner at Melting Pot *without* needing a short-term loan.

Finally, what I’m most thankful for this year: the ability to love with all my heart, the courage to say it and the wisdom to show it.

That’s right, folks. I don’t suck.

And I appreciate that more than anything else.
