The fake “War on Christmas”

“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

I never understood that line, because most people believe in the devil. Most people believe in lots of things that aren’t real. Like angels and natural beauty and fat-free cookies and the War on Christmas.

I almost hesitate to say that the War on Christmas is fake because there are a great many people in this country who are hoping a certain so-called battle will keep Christian-folk preoccupied and therefore away from real issues like health care reform and equal rights for our homosexual brothers and sisters.

But the idea that the most powerful majority in the country is somehow under siege is too laughable to ignore. Yes, yes, you poor oppressed oppressors. However do you sleep at night?

Check it: The American Family Association calls for a boycott against Gap for *not* using the word “Christmas” in commercials and other advertising – even though they do.

Huh?

But while the mouthbreathers gather and protest nothing, the rest of us know exactly what is going on.

The big loser here is the AFA. The annual War-on-Christmas drumbeat is absolutely not about defending the sacredness of Christmas. It is instead — transparently — marketing, a ratings gambit for Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, and for the AFA, the centerpiece of its annual fundraising.

This year, thanks to Gap, the AFA fumbled its boycott ball and in the process managed to look both intolerant and out of touch.

The AFA – intolerant and out of touch. Who’da thought?

I’ve heard a few people on talk radio today discussing how they’re angry with companies for not only ignoring Christmas but equating the Lord’s birth with that “loopy shit” like Chanukah. One person even compared pagan rituals with the devil’s work.

Right.

Pagan rituals like hanging a wreath and decorating a tree.

Okay.

‘Tis the season.

Can’t I just boycott The Gap because I hate The Gap?

  • Me says:

Wow, I just got done posting a reply to a friend’s post on FB that stated the rumors about President Obama having a “holiday” tree at the white house instead of a Christmas tree, as well as banning religious ornaments on it, is untrue and has no merit whatsoever. What is it with people? Like we don’t have so many REAL and important issues to contend with? Let’s go ahead and start a rumor because, well, why not? Bunch of idiots.

PLUS, so cool, my FB status today asks if anyone believes in Satan, b/c I think he exists in the form of Taco Bell/Pizza Hut fast food restaurants. For reals.

I’m boycotting GAP because they sell fur-trimmed parkas and gloves made from the Chinese torture fur farms. I like that commercial… damn, those peeps can shake a leg.

Fake but powerful, this nonsense helps elect republicans.

St. Pete just elected Bill Foster, a creationist, as mayor in part because he played the victim of intolerance. The St. Pete Times ran with this spin on the criticism of Foster’s attempt to get the school board to act on his views. (Their main effort was to smear Kathleen Ford as a racist.)

Karl Rove would have loved this tactic. Turn your opponents strength into a weakness and make your supporters angry, afraid and unable to see through your propaganda.

Think Progress has done some good research on this.

As a Christian I believe Jesus tells us to love our neighbor and that requires us to respect them and wish them a happy holiday in their own tradition.

American Family Association versus the Gap. Didn’t one of these ugly babies begat the other?

Seriously, I really don’t know who to root for in this lesser of two evils contest…
