This Swine Flu Hysteria Has Been Brought to You By…

Who is aware that there were two cops killed in Northern Florida this weekend?
Anyone?
All two of you…wow. That’s two more than I would have guessed. Instead of reporting real news of consequence, the media is focused on hysteria and confusion in the hopes of garnering more readers and viewers.
Desperation is so not hot. But, like swine flu, it is contagious.
Meanwhile, I’m fighting the urge to tell everyone I meet at the ballpark or the supermarket to read Philip Alcabes, grow some common sense, and employ a bit of wisdom.
In other words, relax. And wash your hands. That sniffle ain’t swine flu.
So far, this disease hasn’t killed a single person in the United States. Yet angry men with guns have killed dozens.
Where is the outrage and sense of alarm over gun violence?
Wow. Still all two of you. Amazing.
Todd Schnitt was on the radio yesterday yelling about the woefully unprepared Obama Administration (because we don’t have a Surgeon General yet – are you kidding?) yet fails to mention that Senator Susan Collins, Republican from Maine, fought to remove funds meant to be spent on preparing for pandemics at the Centers for Disease Control.
Of course, Schnitt didn’t mention it because either he is woefully unprepared for his lame radio show or because he thinks his audience is woefully uninformed when it comes to current events.
Where is the outrage and sense of alarm over that?
Thank God Arlen Specter stepped in to provide a distraction from paper masks (all we could afford) and a disease sponsored by Theraflu.
Wake up, more than two people.

The link damning Susan Collins for cutting pandemic flu preparation in the stimulus package (that would stimulate the economy how?) is weird in the context of this post. You say this is a hysteria. I agree. Considering that 36,000 people die every year from the regular flu, it seems a little strange to be spending $900,000,000 on preparing for a pandemic flu that so far has sickened 68 people in the US and has killed no one (so far).
The CDC budget for fighting pandemic flu was doubled in 2008 in reaction to that other non-threat, bird flu. Where does this nonsense stop. Preparedness is fine but let’s put the money where we get the most benefit.
Come on, now. The masks are very Michael Jackson.
On the Monday night Daily Show, John Stewart did a great bit on the media frenzy over swine flu.
Hi Catherine. This post is brilliant. Your blog is brilliant. Do you tweet on twitter? I want to be your follower.
I found this because I’m a friend of Philip Alcabes and was idly googling…

(I agree. *Dread* is wonderufl.)
