Let’s Play a New Game: Is This Racism?
Carol Carter, a Republican official from Hillsborough County, asked in a recent email:
“How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn’t get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?”
Is this racism?
I like how another rightwing activist said this email doesn’t represent the Republican party. Really? Several Repubs I talked to said that they didn’t condone such an email but “it’s a good question.”
Is this racism?
The New York Post ran the following cartoon:

Is this racism?
Al Sharpton thinks it is.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

My answers are yes and yes.
And good for that Republican activist for calling out the official.
The first comment is certainly racial, but not necessarily racist in and of itself any more than Obama’s overwhelming support by the black community is racist. If it was asked with a good-old-boy chuckle and elbow to the ribs, I think it’s safe to say it was racist(and perhaps that was the case in the email under examination). However, if that question is raised to academically discuss priorities/motivations and one was to examine the socio-economic cross-section of those participating each event, then no the question itself isn’t racist, but a mere catalyst for what might be productive sociological discourse.
As for the second entry, W was routinely shown to be a chimp, many jobs are described as being so easy a monkey could do it, so now that we have an African-american president, he is above the same sort of cliches? Perhaps the outrage is racist. Unless of course you were a simian outraged at being compared to a politician, now that I’d understand.
Wow. Enigma is all kinds of hot.
You’re not so bad yourself sweetcheeks.
Is Dale Ernhardt a racer? Wait. What was the question again?
