Are Republicans in Congress High?

Posted by Catherine on Jan 29, 2009 in Politics |

Every one of them voted against President Obama’s stimulus package yesterday.

You know what that means?

It’s up to us. That’s right. It’s up to the Democrats. This shouldn’t come as a shock. After all, we’ve been fixing their f*ckups since the 1930s.

Here’s where you come in.

Call your Senators and tell them: “Support a stimulus package that will put millions of Americans back to work.”

Or keep givin’ us more ammunition to drive more of you out of office in 2010.

I have to give the Republicans some props for this one. This 800+ billion “stimulus” bill is garbage. It’s Christmas for every special interst group out there. On top of that, only 21% of the 800+ billion will be spent in 2009. If it is so urgent to jump start our economy immediately, what are we waiting for?

This cynical bill was just a way to pay back IOU’s to backers. So the congresspeople can say “I voted for that in the original bill, but it didn’t make it through conference”. No one expected this to be anywhere near the final form so Dems could vote for it and Bluedogs and Republicans could vote against it. The real test will come after the Senate passes their version in the conference committee. Then you’ll see some Repubs break off.
Kinda childish and, as I said, cynical, but that’s politics in 2009.

Of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that, even should it pass by Obama’s date in February, because of the legal boondoggery that’s part and parcel on Capital Hill, by the time the bill is actually enacted, fiscal year 2009 will be half over and many of the larger provisions and projects in the bill do not have quick ramp-up times. Republican wrangling, of course, may stretch that time frame out even farther.

Further, that 21% estimate is based on the CBO report that was never actually issued by the CBO and only concerned a portion of the entire plan as seen before the plan even went to committee.

And Mark’s right. This bill was never the final word and simply exists to allow everyone to save some sort of face and claim to be a winner to their constituencies. It’s simple bargaining tactics: Ask for more than you want and then try to get what you need.

No QJ, the 21% estimate is right there in black and white in the CBO report. See the chart at the top of page 3. You do the math. And the difference between the original bill and the one that was passed is negligible.

So much for “timely, targeted and temporary“.

Even if it is enacted in February, FY 2009 would be nearly half over. The FY starts in October.
