If you were the teacher who gave the student credit, and I'd like to think you are, then you are wise indeed. There's nothing wrong with rewarding creativity.

That was funny. Technically, he answered the question correctly. The wording should be "find the value of 'x'. Finding x, he sure did that, and that was great!!
OMG! I wish I had thought of that way back when in math class!
Well, they are exceptional, indeed.
Love this. In college the answer will be, "you tell me".
